I warbled as the water gently flowed
And modestly went merry on its way;
My little hymn, my long and wordless ode,
Sounded to mark the words I could not say.
Adjacent to a path between dark trees
Rode skinny, shallow, and without pretense,
A creek which so sublimely did appease
My lonely heart, to which it felt immense.
That kindly stream was neither grand nor lush,
Along its murky waters dry grass growed,
But how it held my ear when in a hush
It whispered to follow its winding road.
Along it I went nearly without thought,
Enamored with its soft and soothing tone,
Devotion that could only have been brought
From then how glad I felt to be alone.
As with all things my time there could not last
And solemnly I bid that friend goodbye,
But still do I revere that moment passed,
And by that lonely creek I’d gladly die.
