I have accounts on RateYourMusic, Letterboxd, Backloggd, MyAnimeList, and VNDB that I still generally try to keep up, but I like having a space that's my own for logging these sorts of things. I can't promise that my profiles on these websites or this section itself will always be up-to-date and accurate, but neither of us should care very much about that.

Books

American Literature

Walden, Henry David Thoreau, English, 1854.

I got to reading this book through Wikipedia from Ted Kaczynski -> Simple Living -> Henry David Thoreau, which is kind of funny but I'm glad I did.

English Literature
Lyrical Ballads, with a Few Other Poems, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, English, 1798.

Poetry!

History
The Penguin History of the World, Third Edition, J. M. Roberts, English, 1995.

I started this book so long ago and have read it at a snail's pace. I wanted to get a broad overview of world history but the way this book is written doesn't always engage me very well and I don't often find myself gravitating towards reading it. Regardless, I'm trying to get a few pages in before bed each night and hopefully I'll have it done within a year, lol.

Television

American Television

The Sopranos, David Chase, 1999–2007.

A very classic show that I'm enjoying a lot.

Anime
『カウボーイビバップ』 [Cowboy Bebop], Sunrise, 1998–1999.

Every episode I've watched has been fucking amazing, but I'm watching it quite slowly because I feel like I need to be in the right mood to fully appreciate it.

『あずまんが大王 THE ANIMATION』 [Azumanga Daioh The Animation], J.C.Staff, 2002.

I adore the style and sense of humor here. Often quite emotional in a subdued way. I relate to Sakaki a lot.

『桜蘭高校ホスト部』 [Ouran High School Host Club], Igarashi Takuya, 2006.

It's a lot of relatively dumb fun, but all the cherry blossoms and decadence and strapping young men and ladies do make me ooh and aah.

『らき☆すた』 [Lucky☆Star], Kyoto Animation, 2007.

I like this show a lot and it seems to be another big classic. I quite like these little shows where nothing much happen. And Konata is very cute.

Video Games

American Games

DUSK, David Szymanski, 2018. [~]

Completion: In progress, Duskmare difficulty.

I've been feeling a boomer shooter itch recently and I never got past the first episode of this back in the day despite enjoying it quite a bit, so I figured I'd make a project out of it. It'll probably take me a while playing on Duskmare but with these sorts of games I like to challenge myself, and getting through a level without a scratch is pretty gratifying so it's nice to have a difficulty that really forces that. I'm not the biggest fan of all the design choices in this game, gameplay and otherwise, but it's still quite fun and I'm glad it exists, and I might reorganize and reconsider my thoughts once I've gone through it all the way.

Finnish Games
Baba is You, Hempuli, 2019. [~]

Completion: In progress.

I tried playing this game years earlier but I think I was too dumb for it at the time. I revisited it and am actually managing with the puzzles and enjoying it a lot, so I'm hoping to clear it 100% ٩(^◡^)۶

Book Log

A much more accurate title for this section would perhaps be "texts." This is a compendium of works I've read cover-to-cover (or front page to back page, or start of pdf to end of pdf?) since about the beginning of high school. It doesn't include many works I've browsed or surveyed but haven't dedicated myself to fully. It includes many large books and many small essays; the deciding factor on whether a text is included in this list is really a bit arbitrary. I want to avoid compilations and "collected works," but I don't want to go as minute as listing individual poems, so most poems I've read will be glossed over here unless they're large and significant on their own (i.e. Paradise Lost) or are part of a significant, canonical collection (i.e. Les Fleurs du mal).

Louis Theroux: Extreme Love - Autism, Jamie Pickup, 2012.

An interesting watch. I think you can easily come away from this villainizing the autism, and from a different perspective villainizing some of the parents. I've seen this a bit with the sort-of-uncomfortable declarations of "thank GOD someone is open about the horrible burden of disabled children and how hard this is for the parents" and then the reaction of "these parents are so unempathetic and how dare they view their children as a burden" and so on. I think that two things can be true at the same time. Raising a child with severe autism is undoubtably extremely difficult and undeniably a burden. But simultaneously, a lot of autistic children and people generally have to deal with a world that just doesn't understand them, even if it's not exactly that world's fault, and that lack of understanding can at times be the bigger problem than the autism itself.
It felt like many times throughout the documentary parents and adults just don't understand what the child is feeling, or don't know how to approach what the child is feeling, and their actions reflect that failure. Of course, understanding autistic people doesn't come naturally to allistic people, just like understanding allistic people doesn't come naturally to autistic people. But it felt like so many times there was just no outlet or "proper" form of expression for the way these kids felt. And when you have this big overwhelming feeling that other people don't understand, and then they tell you "no" to every form you have of expressing it, what do you do but throw a tantrum? A lot of these kids hit themselves as much as they hit their caretakers. I don't claim to know what's going on in their heads, but I have a gut feeling that that's not an accident. When you have this feeling you can't let out in any way that's acceptable, you lash out but you also feel a rage directed inwards at the fact that you are not acceptable. I loved Nicky, and I felt so much for him when he was being told strategies to manage his anger and he says "I did four of the five strategies" and is then told, basically, just to deal with it.

I feel a lot of kinship with these kids. I myself was never diagnosed "on the spectrum" or anything, but I see these experiences and attitudes as deeply familiar to me. The difficulty socializing, not being understood, feelings of discomfort, and so on. I was a lot high-functioning than most of these kids when I was young and I learned to "mask" fairly early on, but a lot of the behavior here is what I was say was often bubbling beneath the surface, but not quite spilling over into action. All the way up to high school I'd feel the desire to scream and thrash about and ignore everything and be violent towards myself and others and feel, to some extent, like there was a constant disconnect between my world and the world of others. I just always controlled it in public and saved my most "natural" behavior for when I was alone. And I don't really know what the solution for these kids is. To my understanding techniques in working with autism have gotten a lot better since this documentary was made, so I suppose that's good.

Something about this documentary also awoke an old sort of strange nostalgic yearning feeling in me. A feeling of wanting to go back to elementary school and do my childhood over, or maybe experience it over, or experience it continuously. Maybe I feel like I'm not prepared for the world, like deep down inside I am still like these kids that need to be taught to socialize and live in a basic childish environment. Maybe I see these kids in a school with people like them and I wish I had something like that, where I could have been more like myself around people more similar to me as a kid. Maybe I just miss the small colorful classrooms. Who knows.

What Happened on Twenty-third Street, New York City, Edwin S. Porter, 1901.

Just the footage of the city is more interesting than the actual main event.

A Corner in Wheat, D.W. Griffith, 1909.

Some cool early storytelling and development of cinema and stuff... I think my brain is a bit too fried to really appreciate this.

Suspense., Lois Weber and Philips Smalley, 1913.

This I really enjoyed! The use of the split screen was cool and I imagine very innovative for the time, and the pacing was very well done to create the titular emotion.

My dad remembered this movie and wanted to watch it and it is mostly garbage. The first two segments especially were bafflingly bad and have me seriously questioning the mental faculties of Allison Anders and Alexandre Rockwell. The third and fourth are just okay and admittedly the gag the movie ends on is pretty funny. The biggest thing bothering me throughout is that, except for in that very last scene, nobody involved seems to have a sense of comedic timing or timing in general. Conversations and scenes flow so awkwardly in an almost unbearable fashion. Certain parts (especially the first segment) are trying really hard to have a "cartoon" energy while entirely misunderstanding what cartoons should feel and flow like in a way that reminds me of the horrible later episodes of Tom and Jerry. Not good!

The Dark, Sad Life of Boogíe2988, Mike Clum, 2023.

This is mostly poorly made voyeuristic sad trash slop, but I admit I'm a little compelled by the subject and also I was bored and lazy. The title kind of tells you everything you need to know in the sense that this won't be a very empathetic or a very deep experience. Nobody involved in the production of this is smart or skilled enough to really make Boogie confront himself and become able to help himself, so it really is a bit of a freak show. The part midway through where they explain away everything about his life by diagnosing him as just a narcissist is pretty gross. Click here to learn more!

I am not built for this shit!!! I watched this in theaters and it stressed me out so badly, and affected me for the whole rest of the night. To some extent my reaction is probably due to the fact I have not seen many horror movies at all, and I wonder to what extent that affects my experience of the film as a whole, as things that might be cliché and standard to a seasoned horror-watcher I am experiencing here for the very first time and am viewing "with fresh eyes." Regardless of whether I'm seeing it with the rose-tint of a new experience, I still think I like this film quite a bit. The basic story is a little cookie-cutter but the scares are very effective and there's still something to think about and sink your teeth into.

Anime

『イッパツ危機娘』 [Ippatsu Kiki Musume], Group TAC, 1999.

A small, funny little show about a girl who gets in some ridiculous situations. Very unapologetically horny, which I always appreciate. Watched during Pantsu Prophet CyTube party.

『エイケン』 [Eiken], J.C. Staff, 2003–2004.

Extreme fan service with massive tits and panty shots in basically every frame. I'm going to be honest this was a bit too much for me in the sense that (1) I'm more of an ass guy and (2) when every scene is of some ridiculous fan service thing it all kind of blends together and loses its engaging quality. It was still fun to watch nonetheless, and of course fun to watch with the Pantsu Prophet chat. Call me a faggot but tbh my favorite part was Densuke in the swimsuit. His hair tied up was cuute! Watched during Pantsu Prophet CyTube party.

『DEATH NOTE』, Araki Tetsurō, 2006–2007.

Super daring stuff, and an interesting direction after Bitches Brew and before things like Dark Magus and Agharta. I kind of wish there was more Miles that really leaned into funk like this, though I think a bit of what this record is doing is also done to some extent by the Headhunters.

Sucking Songs, Primus, 1986-XX-XX.

This is a demo (one of the very first, I believe) that contains some earlier and slower versions of classics like "Tommy the Cat", "Sgt. Baker", and "Eleven" (called "They", here). It's super cool to see the evolution of the band and the lower tempo makes these songs feel a bit more acidic and sludgy in a not-unpleasant way. "Sgt. Baker" in particular sounds quite evil and almost hypnotic.

Africa, Pharoah Sanders, 1987-XX-XX.
Bleach, Nirvana, 1989-06-15.
Horrified, Repulsion, 1989-07-10.

This album is fucking AWESOME. It's so fuzzy and filthy but structured and tight enough to make it extremely gratifying and satisfying. The riffs are incredible here, and the drumming is super sharp. I love Scott Carlson's voice on this, especially when a song will settle into more of a groove and he occasionally gets almost "sing-songy" (I'm mostly thinking of "Festering Boils", which is probably my favorite.) One of those albums that reminds me to listen to more grindcore.

Fucking amazing. Super technically impressive and some of the best grindcore I've ever heard. The riffs are great and very unique and Jon Chang's voice is incredible both in the high and low range. His screechs remind me a lot of ∈Y∋, but that might just be a "guy who's only watched the Boss Baby" kind of thing. Regardless, while I have a taste for rumbling and growling, the screechs are a lot more immediately grabbing to me. Great album.

A little underwhelming for me. The riffs were alright but nothing too special or memorable. I tend to like when grindcore contrasts moments of pure blast-beat with occasional grooves, and that didn't really happen here. Something about the vocals just wasn't for me, and to be honest I couldn't tell that apparently the vocalist changes halfway. It's the meme song, but I honestly liked "You Suffer" more than any other track on this because it was fairly memorable. I definitely prefer Repulsion in terms of "early pioneering grindcore," though I'm glad I checked this out.

A sort of remaster/remake of the 2023 album. You can definitely see how Darian's improved and evolved a bit over time. I like the vocal additions to "Computer Tomfoolery" and the new incredibly noisy "Money Bags." Also, the Bandcamp download features yours truly!
